In the days leading up to his murder, he was providing testimony in a whistleblower action against the firm.
Boeing expressed sadness upon learning of Mr. Barnett’s death. The Charleston County Coroner confirmed his death to the BBC on Monday.
According to the report, the 62-year-old died of a “self-inflicted” wound on March 9, and authorities are investigating.
Mr. Barnett worked for the US airline for 32 years until retiring in 2017 due to health issues.
From 2010 on, he worked as a quality manager at the North Charleston factory that produces the 787 Dreamliner, a cutting-edge airplane utilized mostly on long-haul flights.
In 2019, Mr. Barnett told the BBC that under-pressure staff had purposefully fitted substandard components to planes on the assembly line.
He also stated that he had discovered major issues with oxygen systems, which might imply that one in every four breathing masks would fail in an emergency.
He stated that shortly after beginning work in South Carolina, he became worried that the haste to build new airplanes hampered the assembly process and jeopardized safety, which the corporation disputed.
He subsequently told the BBC that staff had failed to follow processes designed to trace components throughout the production, resulting in faulty components going missing.
He stated that in certain cases, substandard components were taken from scrap bins and installed to planes being built to avoid production line delays.
