Lok Sabha election 2024:

India will have its general elections from April 19, 2024, to June 1, 2024, to choose the 543 members of the 18th Lok Sabha. The elections will happen in seven phases, and we’ll know the results on June 4, 2024. It’s going to be the biggest election ever, even bigger than the one in 2019. It will also be the longest election in India, lasting 44 days. Narendra Modi, the current Prime Minister, will be running for a third term.

Regional parties Biju Janata Dal and Shiv Sena have released their initial lists of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. At the same time, the Bhartiya Janata Party is announcing its star campaigners for different states. Also, the Election Commission has issued show-cause notices to BJP leader Dilip Ghosh and Congress leader Supriya Shrimata for making offensive remarks about West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kangana Ranaut, respectively.

Shiv Sena (UBT) has revealed 16 candidates for the elections, including former Union Ministers Anant Geeta and Arvind Sawant for Raigad and South Mumbai constituencies respectively. Meanwhile, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has announced candidates for nine out of 21 Lok Sabha seats and 72 out of 147 Assembly seats in Odisha. Pranab Prakash Das, the BJD’s organizational secretary, is set to contest for the Sambalpur Lok Sabha seat, holding a
significant position within the party.

Political parties are readying themselves for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections in 2024, as announced by the Election Commission on March 16. In addition to the Lok Sabha elections for 543 seats, the Election Commission has announced Assembly elections in Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Odisha, along with by polls for 26 vacant assembly seats. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be seeking a third consecutive term, aiming to become the second person in independent India after Jawaharlal Nehru to achieve this milestone. The opposition alliance, Indian National Democratic Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), is hoping to challenge the BJP’s electoral dominance and diverse social coalition.

In the 2019 general elections, the BJP capitalized on Prime Minister Modi’s widespread popularity and the prevailing nationalistic sentiment to secure an unprecedented majority. The party secured 303 seats on its own, and when combined with its allies in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), it won a total of 336 seats. Meanwhile, the Congress party suffered a significant setback, managing to secure only 52 seats.
