Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse:
On Tuesday morning, a container ship collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge near Baltimore, USA, causing a major part of the bridge to collapse.
As a result, several vehicles on the bridge fell into the Patapsco River below. Hours later, the Coast Guard reported that at least six people were believed to have died in the incident. Maryland Governor Wes Moore declared a state of emergency, and the Port of Baltimore is closed to ships for now President Joe Biden promised that the government will pay for fixing the bridge and reopening the port completely.
About the bridge:
The Baltimore bridge, commonly called the Key Bridge, was built in 1977 to honor Francis Scott Key, who wrote the US national anthem, the Star-Spangled Banner.
The bridge was 1.6 miles long and crossed the Patapsco River and Baltimore harbor. The Patapsco River connects to the Chesapeake Bay, which is the largest estuary in the US. The bridge collapsed when a huge container ship lost power and hit it early Tuesday, causing people and vehicles to fall into the cold Patapsco River.
Workers died:
Eight people were working on the bridge at the time, part of a construction crew hired to repair potholes and make fixes. Two of the workers are from Guatemala, as confirmed by the Guatemalan consulate in Maryland.
After the collapse, two people were rescued from the water. One is in serious condition, while the other appears to be unharmed.
Six people are believed to have died because of the cold water and the time spent underwater, according to the US Coast Guard. They said this after a major search and rescue effort throughout the day. Now, the focus will shift to finding the bodies and bringing closure to the families of the victims.

State Police Colonel Butler mentioned they plan to send divers back into the water tomorrow morning to recover the workers’ bodies. The container ship, called Dali, crashed into a bridge support pillar around 1:30 a.m. as it was leaving Baltimore Harbor for Sri Lanka.
