Black Friday takes on the world

Mirabaud Group’s senior investment specialist, John Plassard, has written about the age-old American tradition of Thanksgiving. The holiday has been celebrated annually since 1789, with a meal of turkey being a staple part of the festivities. The tradition’s roots can be traced back to the founding pilgrims of the Plymouth colony, who were helped by the indigenous people upon their arrival on the Mayflower in 1620.

The customary shopping frenzy associated with Thanksgiving no longer spans just three days; it now extends to at least four days, encompassing Cyber Monday as well. Cyber Monday, an online shopping extravaganza that occurs on the Monday following Thanksgiving, is highly anticipated in the United States, serving as the culmination of a series of extravagant promotions.

In 2022, Black Friday experienced a 2.3% rise in online sales compared to the previous year, 2021. On that day, approximately $9.12 billion was spent online, as consumers utilized different payment services to make their purchases and avoid long lines in physical stores.

The National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics have released data showing that a record-breaking 196.7 million consumers engaged in both online and in-store shopping during the period between Thanksgiving Day and Cyber Monday. However, despite this increase, it fell short of the 8.6% growth seen in 2021 and the remarkable 32% surge experienced in 2020. In October, online toy sales witnessed a staggering 285% rise in sales on an average day. Another positive aspect was the electronics category, which saw a 19% overall increase in sales up until Friday evening. Furthermore, smart home electronics and audio equipment experienced a remarkable surge of over 200% on an average day in October. According to Adobe Analytics, the utilization of “curbside pickup” was comparatively more modest in 2022 when compared to 2021. This service was utilized for 13% of online orders, whereas it accounted for 21% in the previous year. Lastly, in Germany, Black Friday sales on 25 November 2022 witnessed a significant increase of 440% compared to the previous Black Friday (18 November 2022), surpassing the average sales of the previous week, which only saw a 270% rise.

However, the most significant surge was observed in Italy, where online sales skyrocketed by 476% on Black Friday. What can we anticipate for Thanksgiving 2023? According to research conducted by BCG Henderson Institute, despite the ongoing burden of the rising cost of living, 74% of consumers express their intention to capitalize on the discounts offered during the November sales this year. This figure marks a notable increase of 7 percentage points in comparison to 2022. Throughout the duration of Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Singles’ Day, it is projected that US consumers will allocate the highest average spending per person ($460), followed by Switzerland ($390) and Germany ($385). It is expected that the average expenditure will surpass that of 2022, with certain countries experiencing an increase of up to 22%. This surge in spending, influenced in part by year-on-year inflation, also signifies a growing emphasis on bargain-hunting as consumers shift their December holiday shopping to November. Black Friday holds great anticipation in the annual shopping calendar. “As consumers face financial pressures this year, their focus on securing deals is stronger than ever,” stated Jessica Distler, Managing Director and Partner at BCG, and coauthor of the study.

Historically, the sectors that benefit from the holiday season are retailers, e-commerce, consumer discretionary and the technology sectors. Sectors suffering from inflationary pressures, such as energy, materials and utilities, could be the worst performers.

Here is a non-exhaustive list of the stocks that have historically performed best during this period:

  • Apple
  • Nintendo
  • Dell
  • Amazon
  • Walmart
  • Target
  • ASML
  • L’Oréal
  • Zalando

A global phenomenon

Black Friday and Cyber Monday originated in the United States, but the phenomenon has spread across borders.

For example, according to an Opinion Way study, the average amount spent during the French Black Friday is expected to be €416. That’s 40% more than in 2021. Of course, not everyone in France will spend this much, as shown by the breakdown of spending reported by the consumers surveyed:

  • 25% of them plan to spend between €100 and €199
  • 22% plan to spend between €200 and €299
  • 19% plan to spend between €300 and €499
  • 27% could spend more than €500

And it is precisely in the €500-plus spending bracket that the change is most significant compared to last year (+4 points). Year after year, Black Friday is attracting more and more consumers, both in shops and on e-commerce websites. According to Opinion Way, 27% of French people are tempted by the good deals and discounts on offer during this event.

Black Friday 2023 is expected to see a surge in sales for ready-to-wear clothing, shoes, and household appliances, as they have been the top performers in previous years. Additionally, toys and other items commonly given as Christmas presents are also anticipated to do well. Notably, smartphones are likely to stand out in this category.

In Switzerland, Black Friday sales have experienced significant growth each year until 2020, according to BlackFridaydeals. However, in 2021, sales remained stagnant at 500 million Swiss francs due to supply issues and the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic. The following year, in 2022, sales actually declined for the first time, reaching only 480 million Swiss francs. This decline can be attributed to factors such as diminished consumer confidence and the rising cost of living.

Furthermore, the concurrent occurrence of the football World Cup and the increasing trend of retailers offering enticing deals leading up to Black Friday also contributed to the decrease in sales. It is still too early to determine whether this downward trend will persist in 2023.
