CBS PHILADELPHIA – According to police, several dozen automobiles are stolen in Philadelphia every day. Vehicle thefts have been at an all-time high this year.

A South Philly family’s automobile was taken on Thanksgiving night, and they were more concerned about losing what was inside the vehicle.

The Petroskis have been residents of South Philly since the early 1990s and like the convenience and free entertainment.

“Bruce Springsteen, I could hear him while taking a shower,” Lynn Petroski explained. “This is where the Mummers used to come up. They might be heard. We did not have to go anywhere.

According to the couple, they shared one automobile, which they primarily utilized for doctor’s visits and food shopping. They’re now looking for a backup plan.

“Because I’m a realist, I think to myself, ‘Wow, it’s taken this long for someone to steal my car.'” “At the same time, I’m really surprised,” John Petroski remarked.

They discovered their automobile had been stolen from their authorized handicapped parking place late on Thanksgiving night.

“Upset that we live in a time when people think it’s OK to take somebody else’s property,” Petroski remarked.

A stolen automobile on Thanksgiving is one thing, but it wasn’t until the next morning that the couple learned they wouldn’t just be unable to drive, but even walk about.

“The following morning, I realize, ‘Oh, the walker.'” ‘Uh oh, the cane,’ muttered Lynn Petroski.

According to John Petroski, he suffers from several medical issues and finds it difficult to move without help.

“Around the house, I have the stuff to touch, grab, so I’m pretty good here, if I’m outside, yes I need them,” John Petroski was quoted as saying. “I need the walker if I’m going a long distance.” I can use a cane for short distances.”

Police in Philadelphia have verified that they are looking for the Petroskis’ stolen 2017 Hyundai Sonata.

According to Philadelphia police, more than 20,000 automobiles have been stolen in the city this year, breaking all prior records. There were 12,000 stolen autos in Philadelphia last year.

Last month, a CBS News Philadelphia investigation discovered that Hyundais and Kias account for more than 60% of stolen automobiles, potentially as a result of a how-to video that went viral on social media.

“What we’re seeing is that the majority of our arrests do involve juveniles, and that’s who’s drawn to these TikTok videos,” said Capt. Jason Smith of the Philadelphia Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit. “That’s where they’re learning how to steal these vehicles.”

A common issue that has put folks like the Petroskis in a difficult position.

“The walker and cane are my way of getting around,” stated John Petroski.

A baby who was abandoned in the woods only one hour after birth now has a permanent family, thanks to deputies and townspeople who rescued her about a year ago.

The infant girl was legally adopted on Wednesday, Nov. 29, according to Public Information Officer Brian Bruchey of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) in Winter Haven.

“We have an exciting update to share with you,” the PCSO posted on Facebook. “Nearly one year ago, on January 28th, at about 1:47 in the morning, PCSO deputies rescued an abandoned newborn baby girl in Mulberry.”

A BABY IN NORTH CAROLINA HEARS HER FATHER’S VOICE FOR THE FIRST TIME AND BURSTS INTO TEARS.

“She was wrapped in a blanket and still attached to the placenta.” The temperature outdoors was in the lower 50s, and Polk County Fire Rescue personnel examined the girl and concluded that, based on her temperature, she had been born approximately an hour before she was discovered.”

“Fortunately, a nearby resident heard the baby girl’s cries, and called 911.”

The couple who adopted the infant have declined interviews at this time, but they have permitted police to share images with anybody who has followed the baby’s journey “and prayed for her well-being,” according to a Facebook post by the PCSO.

“We are thrilled to share with you these photos from this morning of this precious angel with her new mom and dad, along with PCSO’s Detective Green and Sgt. Ryan,” the title of the post stated.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd revealed some of the information surrounding the baby’s abandonment during a press conference on January 29.

Ryan is photographed with the parents (center) and the infant girl at a Florida courthouse. Authorities told Fox News Digital that the couple, who asked that their identities not be used in news publications, adopted the kid about a year after she was discovered alone in the woods. He stated that deputies got a complaint soon after 1:45 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28, regarding what sounded like “a baby crying outside” in a wooded area near the Regal Loop Mobile Home Park on Bailey Road in Mulberry, as previously reported by Fox News Digital.

The noises began late Friday into early Saturday, according to Judd when a neighbor heard what she assumed was “some cats screaming and fighting.”

The screams died down after about an hour and a half when the woman “heard screaming and crying again.”

“She stepped outside and said, ‘Well, that’s a baby.’ So she called her husband, and the two of them went exploring in the woods,” Judd said. “They found this infant, this beautiful baby girl.”

Deputies came to find the infant girl covered in “some old blankets” on a hill in temps in the lower 50s.

She was born about an hour before she was discovered and weighed around six and a half pounds, according to police.

The child’s adoptive parents have declined interviews at this time, but they have agreed to enable police to release images on social media for anybody who has “prayed for her well-being,” the PCSO stated on Facebook. (Polk County Sheriff’s Department)

Judd had given her the name Angel Grace Lnu at the moment.

“She’s as lovely as an angel.” “By the grace of God, she’s not dead, and the Lnu [means] the last name is unknown,” Judd stated during a news conference in January.

According to Judd, the infant appears to be of Hispanic heritage. Investigators questioned neighbors for information as the PCSO dispatched a K-9 unit, a bloodhound, a drone, and an aircraft unit in the search for answers.

“Usually it’s a younger person who does not want the child or has somehow hidden the presence of the child from their parents,” he added.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to a complaint in January 2023 from a homeowner who discovered a wailing infant outside in the woods in 50-degree weather with the umbilical cord and placenta still connected. Authorities believe the girl was delivered barely one hour before. (Polk County Sheriff’s Department)

Due to Florida’s Safe Haven Law, Judd stated, it’s a rare occurrence for the agency.

“You can legally take a baby a week or less in age to a fire station, EMS station, or a hospital and hand it over anonymously and you have no criminal proceedings against you for child neglect or abandonment or anything like that,” she said.

The PCSO reported on Facebook on Wednesday that “despite an extensive effort” by police, the girl’s mother has never been found or recognized.

The youngster was formally adopted 10 months and one day later, according to the PCSO.

According to Clay County’s official government website, the Florida Safe Haven Law was enacted to prevent baby abandonment in the state.

“The Safe Haven Law is a safety net that allows parents to leave their unharmed newborns, not more than a week old, at any Safe Haven facility recognized by state law, anonymously and without fear of prosecution,” according to the website.

According to A Safe Haven for Newborns 501c3, there have been 376 newborns “not abandoned in Florida” and left at Safe Haven (fire/EMS and hospitals) since 2000, when Safe Haven rules were implemented.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office has been unable to locate or identify the mother of a newborn girl who was found abandoned in the woods behind a couple’s Florida home. The youngster has now been adopted for ten months and one day. (Polk County Sheriff’s Department)

According to the organization, every state in the United States has a Safe Haven statute, albeit each state differs in the following ways:

Age restrictions
Individuals who may give up a child
Situations that necessitate the surrender of a newborn child

An Australian couple is furious that their ideal vacation was destroyed and they were bumped from an overbooked Royal Caribbean cruise; you won’t believe what they were told.

A couple from Australia was about to take a vacation cruise when the business, Royal Caribbean, overbooked the trip, leaving them behind.

The married pair boarded the Quantum of the Seas on Tuesday, prepared to set out on an eight-night South Pacific cruise, arriving at Port of Brisbane.

They were told there were no open rooms out of the 2,090 aboard the ship, and they were turned away just as they were about to embark.

After that, a letter from Royal Caribbean International confirming that the trip had been overbooked was given to them.

The disgruntled customers’ vacation was wrecked despite having paid at least $595 each for the trip.

A couple’s South Pacific cruise vacation aboard Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas (pictured) was marred by overbooking, leaving them enraged.

According to the correspondence, Royal Caribbean was ‘unable to give a stateroom number’ to the couple’s ticket.

It said, “We value the time and effort you invested in planning your cruise and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience.”

We want you to enjoy every moment that you spend with us, so we have put up a few other alternatives that we think will work for you.

Following that, the couple was presented with four alternatives, one of which was a refund coupled with a 25% discount on a subsequent cruise.

If customers chose to hold out on booking the initial cruise they had planned until a cancellation occurred, there was an additional option that gave them US$100 in credit to utilize on board.

Other choices included selecting a different seven- or eight-night trip with a complimentary upgrade “if available,” or modifying their reservation to a nine-night vacation with a comparable itinerary on January 29.

The couple received a letter from Royal Caribbean informing them that they could select between four choices for compensation or to take the trip, which would have cost them at least $595 apiece.

Angry passengers seized the opportunity to leave the cruise and received a complete reimbursement together with a 25% discount on the price of a subsequent journey.

Demand for the trip went “beyond the rooms that were available,” according to Royal Caribbean International, which spoke with Daily Mail Australia.

The firm released a statement saying, “Unfortunately, efforts to accommodate all those who wished to sail fell short for a group of our guests, and some were unable to sail as planned.”

We thank you for your understanding and apologize for any trouble these disruptions have caused.

“We have made every effort to make up for the inconvenience this has caused by working with each affected guest.”
