Moscow attack at Friday night:
Dozens killed in Moscow:
A tragic event unfolded in the western outskirts of the city on Friday night when a group of at least five gunmen, clad in camouflage and armed with automatic weapons, stormed into a packed Crocus City Hall during a performance by the veteran rock band Picnic. They opened fire indiscriminately on the crowd and set off explosives, causing a massive fire that engulfed the concert hall and led to its roof collapsing.
This attack, one of the deadliest in recent Russian history, occurred amidst Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which is now in its third year. Moscow’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, described the incident as an “immense tragedy.”
Islamic State claims responsibility:
Gunmen stormed a packed concert hall in Moscow, firing at the audience, resulting in over 60 deaths and more than 100 injuries. The assailants set fire to the venue in a bold attack shortly after President Vladimir Putin secured a significant victory in the elections. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility, with U.S. intelligence agencies warning Russian officials about a planned attack by the group’s branch in Afghanistan. The concert hall was set to host a performance by a well-known rock band, with tickets seemingly sold out for the event. The venue, capable of accommodating over 9,000 people, was expected to be at full capacity.
It’s been suggested that the attack was perpetrated by Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), a regional branch of the IS terrorist group. IS has been linked to several major terror incidents in Russia, such as the 2017 bombing in the St Petersburg metro, which resulted in 15 deaths and 45 injuries American news agencies have reported that US intelligence stated there is “no reason to doubt” the claims of responsibility made by the Islamic State regarding the attack.
After the US left:
After the US left Afghanistan in 2021, a group called Islamic State, based mainly in Afghanistan, started paying more attention to Russia. This group was created in 2015 by fighters from different places, like Pakistan and Uzbekistan. They are active in central Asia and Russia. In January, they carried out two bomb attacks in Iran, which killed almost 100 people. The president said he hopes the injured people get better soon and thanked the doctors.
Firefighters rescued about 100 people from the building. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin called it a terrible tragedy and expressed condolences to the victims’ families. He also ordered everyone affected by the incident to help.
Conclusion:
The Moscow region’s health ministry released a list of 145 people taken to hospitals in and around Moscow due to the attack. Among them, at least six were children. The attack happened as the band Picnic was preparing to perform at the Moscow concert hall on Friday night. Pyknic, one of Russia’s oldest and most popular rock bands, was founded in the late 1970s. They have a distinct style influenced by art rock, Russian, and eastern folk cultures.
Despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Pyknic has continued to perform throughout Russia, unlike some other rock bands.
