We must remember Nobel Laureate and Auschwitz survivor Elie Wiesel in light of the latest United Nations decision against Israel. Although he died on July 2, 2016, his lessons and impact continue to live on. For Elie, remembering was essential. His remarks about Jerusalem, our eternal capital, ring true now as they have always and will continue to do.
Jerusalem, as a Jew, is beyond politics for me. It is referenced over 600 times in the Bible, yet not once in the Koran. It has a strong presence in Jewish history. There has never been a more compelling prayer in Jewish history than the one that expresses our longing to return to Jerusalem. Many theologians see it as Jewish history, while many poets regard it as a source of inspiration. It belongs to the Jewish people and is much more than a city; it is what links one Jew to another in mysterious ways. It is not the first time a Jew visits Jerusalem; rather, it is a homecoming. My mother’s lullaby about Jerusalem was the first song I heard. Its pain and excitement are etched in our collective memory.
Since King David made Jerusalem his capital, Jews have lived within its walls with only two interruptions: when Roman invaders barred them from entering the city and again when under Jordanian occupation, Jews of all nationalities were denied entry into the old Jewish quarter to meditate and pray at the Wall, the last vestige of Solomon’s temple. It’s worth remembering that if Jordan hadn’t helped Egypt and Syria in the war against Israel, the ancient city of Jerusalem would still be Arab. While Jews were willing to die for Jerusalem, they were not willing to kill for it.
For the first time in history, Jews, Christians, and Muslims may all openly worship at their sites. And, contrary to popular belief, Jews, Christians, and Muslims are permitted to construct anyplace in any placethe city. The sorrow over Jerusalem is about memories, not real estate.
What is the answer? Pressure will not result in a solution. Is there a way out? There has to be, and there will be. Why take on the most complicated and sensitive issue so soon? Why not start by taking actions that will allow the Israeli and Palestinian populations to coexist in a safe environment? Why not save the most difficult and sensitive matter until later?
Jerusalem must remain the world’s Jewish spiritual capital, a symbol of trust and hope rather than grief and anger. According to the Hasidic teacher Rebbe Nahman of Bratslav, “everything in this world has a heart; the heart itself has its own heart.”
