WASHINGTON (AP) – House Republicans are preparing to formally launch their impeachment investigation on President Joe Biden. However, House Democrats are protesting, claiming that their Republican colleagues have concluded that impeaching the president is unavoidable.

“They’re on a very slippery slope if they vote for impeachment because they’re not going to start this thing unless they vote for it,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., the senior Democrat on the House Oversight Committee.

House Republicans, on the other hand, have argued that impeachment is not a foregone conclusion. According to them, GOP investigators are continuing their investigation into Biden as a fact-finding expedition.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., stated on Tuesday that Republicans do not want to “prejudge” any actions.

“We are not making a political decision. “It’s a legal decision,” Johnson explained at a weekly press conference. “We cannot predict the outcome.” The Constitution forbids us from doing so. We must pursue the truth wherever it leads.”

Republicans claim Biden benefitted financially from his family’s international business transactions, but they have yet to present proof directly incriminating the president.

Rep. Don Bacon, R-Neb., one of 17 vulnerable Republicans representing districts won by Biden in 2020, said Tuesday that the president has “probably not” committed high crimes or misdemeanors, which are considered impeachable offenses.

Bacon, who acknowledged that he may be an “outlier,” also stated that “it was more likely than not” that Republicans would not prepare articles of impeachment against the president. Instead, he said that the investigation will offer information to hesitant voters ahead of the presidential race in 2024.

Regardless, the inquiry might face legal challenges. Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., launched the investigation against Biden without a formal vote in the House in September. He noted a precedent created by House Democrats in 2019 when they launched an investigation of former President Donald Trump without a floor vote.

That argument has yet to persuade the Biden administration. The White House has dismissed the investigation, citing a Justice Department ruling from the Trump administration that declares any impeachment inquiry that hasn’t been put to a vote in the lower chamber unlawful.

Republicans think that a formal green light from the House will strengthen the investigation’s legal standing if it goes to court.

Some of the conference’s most conservative members argue that the probe is only an investigation and that impeachment procedures should not contain a predetermined conclusion.

“It’s just getting the information,” said Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., a member of the House Freedom Caucus. Norman stated that it was quite “possible” that the House would terminate the investigation without writing articles of impeachment.

Other House Democrats continue to believe that Republicans’ objectives are very obvious.

“They wouldn’t be doing this if they didn’t intend to bring (impeachment) to the floor,” Massachusetts Rep. Jim McGovern said. “This is not a frivolous exercise. They intend to pursue this all the way.”

Rep. Dusty Johnson, R-South Dakota, chair of the pragmatic Main Street Caucus, characterized Democrats’ complaints as “spin.”

“The House has oversight authority under the Constitution.” “It doesn’t say that every time you do oversight, there has to be some kind of smoking gun,” he explained.

Is Joe Biden Going to be Impeached?

Recently, there has been speculation and debate surrounding the possibility of Joe Biden, the 46th President of the United States, facing impeachment. As House Republicans prepare to authorize a probe, Democrats have issued a cautionary statement. In this article, we will explore the current situation, the reasons behind these actions, and the potential outcomes.

The Background

Impeachment is a serious process that allows Congress to hold a sitting President accountable for alleged misconduct or abuse of power. It involves a formal investigation by the House of Representatives, followed by a trial in the Senate. While impeachment does not necessarily lead to removal from office, it can have significant political and legal implications.

Since taking office, President Biden has faced criticism and scrutiny from his political opponents. Some Republicans have raised concerns about his policies, executive actions, and handling of certain issues. These concerns have prompted calls for an impeachment inquiry.

The Republican Probe

House Republicans, who are in the minority, have announced their intention to authorize a probe into President Biden’s actions. This move is seen as an attempt to investigate potential misconduct and gather evidence to support a case for impeachment.

It is important to note that authorizing a probe does not automatically lead to impeachment. It signifies the beginning of a formal investigation and allows the House Republicans to gather information and conduct hearings to determine if there are grounds for impeachment.

The Democratic Cautionary Statement

Democrats, who hold the majority in the House of Representatives, have issued a cautionary statement in response to the Republican probe. They argue that it is premature and politically motivated. Democrats believe that the probe is an attempt to undermine President Biden’s administration rather than a genuine pursuit of justice.

They argue that the focus should be on addressing the pressing issues facing the nation, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the economy, climate change, and social justice. Democrats fear that a prolonged impeachment process could distract from these critical matters and hinder progress on important legislative agendas.

Potential Outcomes

It is important to remember that at this stage, the authorization of a probe does not guarantee impeachment. The investigation must uncover substantial evidence of wrongdoing, and the House of Representatives must vote to impeach by a majority. Even if the House votes in favor of impeachment, the trial would then move to the Senate, where a two-thirds majority would be required to convict and remove President Biden from office.

Given the current political landscape, it is unlikely that Democrats would support impeachment, as they hold the majority in both the House and the Senate. However, the situation could change depending on the evidence presented during the probe and the political climate at the time.

Conclusion

The speculation surrounding the possibility of Joe Biden’s impeachment is a reflection of the intense political divisions in the United States. While House Republicans are preparing to authorize a probe, Democrats have issued a cautionary statement emphasizing the need to focus on pressing national issues. It is important to remember that impeachment is a complex and lengthy process that requires substantial evidence and political support. Only time will tell how this situation unfolds and whether it will have any significant impact on President Biden’s administration.
