Democrats in Florida are facing a revolt.

The Florida Democratic Party is receiving criticism for submitting only one contender for the state’s Democratic presidential nomination.
Democratic candidates running for president in 2024 are outraged by the state party’s decision to only put President Joe Biden on the primary ballot in Florida. The three Democrats vying against Biden for the Democratic nomination have slammed the decision, calling it “undemocratic manipulation,” comparing it to the political conflict in the Islamic Republic of Iran, and threatening legal action.
“Americans would expect the absence of democracy in Tehran, not Tallahassee,” said Representative Dean Phillips in a statement on Thursday. “Intentional voter disenfranchisement runs counter to everything our Democratic Party and country stand for.” As Democrats, we must resist authoritarians, not to join them.”
On Friday afternoon, author Marianne Williamson and The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur, both of whom are seeking to replace Biden as the Democratic nominee, will conduct a joint press conference on the news from Florida, which they have dubbed an “attempt to circumvent democracy.” Since commencing his campaign in October, Uygur, who is ineligible for the presidency since he is a naturalized citizen who moved from Turkey in 1978, has raised more than $250,000.
Williamson’s team stated in a news statement announcing the briefing that the conduct broke Democratic National Committee regulations and that she intends to “seek every legal recourse to oppose this undemocratic manipulation.”
Parties choose who appears on the primary ballot under state legislation. Parties were obliged to submit a list of authorized candidates to state election authorities by Thursday, but the Florida Democratic Party informed the state on November 1 that Biden would be the lone primary contender. Phillips and Ugyur had just been in the race for a few days, and Williamson had been campaigning since February.
