Coachella, also known as the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, happens every year at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, right in the Coachella Valley in the Colorado Desert. It was started by Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen in 1999 and put together by Goldenvoice, which is part of AEG Presents. The festival is all about music and art, with artists from lots of different genres like rock, pop, indie, hip hop, and electronic dance music. There are also cool art installations and sculptures around the venue. Different stages host live music throughout the event, so there’s always something happening. Coachella is an annual music and arts festival held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, in the Coachella Valley in the Colorado Desert.

The roots of the Coachella Festival can be traced back to a Pearl Jam concert in 1993 at the Empire Polo Club, where the band chose to perform to protest Ticketmaster-controlled venues. This event proved that the site was suitable for large gatherings, leading to the first Coachella Festival in October 1999, shortly after Woodstock ’99. After skipping 2000, Coachella became an annual event starting in April 2001, initially as a one-day affair. In 2002, it expanded to two days, and in 2007, it expanded to two days, and in 2007, it added a third day. In 2012, the festival introduced a second weekend with the same lineup as the first. Camping on the grounds was permitted starting in 2003, marking one of several expansions and changes throughout Coachella’s history.

Day 1 of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has started, and there’s a mix of different artists performing. Lana Del Rey is the main attraction, but there are also other performers like Sabrina Carpenter, Suki Waterhouse, Deftones, Tinashe, Faye Webster, and many others performing on different stages throughout the event.

At the 2024 Coachella Festival, Areez, an 8-member boy group from KQ Entertainment, took the stage at the Sahara tent on April 12 at 10:45 pm PST for their debut performance. They made history as the first K-pop boy group to perform at Coachella. With members Hongguang, Seonghwa, Yunho, Yeoyang, San, Mingi, Woo Young, and Jong-Ho, Areez delivered an electrifying performance that turned their setlist into a full-fledged concert. The audience was hyped and eager for more. Additionally, Areez hinted at a future musical project, exciting their fans, known as Tains, even further.

History:

Back on November 5, 1993, Pearl Jam had a concert at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. They chose this place because they didn’t want to perform in Los Angeles due to a disagreement with Ticketmaster over ticket fees. About 25,000 fans showed up for the concert. This event showed that the Polo Club could host big events like this. Paul Tollett, who booked the venue for Pearl Jam through
his company, Goldenvoice, said that this concert planted the idea for a music festival there in the future.

Around 1997, Goldenvoice, a concert promotion company, was struggling to compete with bigger companies like SFX Entertainment. They couldn’t offer as much money to book popular bands, so they were losing out on a lot of shows. Paul Tollett, one of the people behind Goldenvoice, came up with the idea of a music festival. He wanted to have multiple venues and book cool artists who might not be top charting but still had a big following. While he was at the 1997 Glastonbury Festival, Tollett handed out flyers to artists and managers, showing pictures of the Empire Polo Club and suggesting it as a venue for a festival. Unlike Glastonbury, which often gets muddy from rain, Coachella would be sunny and nice, according to the flyers. Even though people laughed at the idea initially, Tollett believed in it and kept pushing forward with his plan.

After searching for potential locations, Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen from Goldenvoice went back to the Empire Polo Club during the Big Gig festival in 1998. They were really impressed with how well the site could work for a festival, so they decided to hold their event there. They originally wanted to have their first festival in 1998, but it didn’t happen until the following year. On July 16, 1999, Goldenvoice announced that the Indio City Council had given the green light for the festival and would provide $90,000 for things like traffic control and safety. The city wanted to make sure they wouldn’t lose money like they did with the Big Gig festival the year before, which cost them $16,000 because of last-minute changes and low attendance. The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was officially announced on July 28 with a lineup of 40 acts, and tickets went on sale on August 7.

During their debut at Coachella, Hongguang and his crew from Areez got the crowd really hyped up, and the local audience even started calling them the “Latino Kings.” They kicked off their performance with a bang, singing their popular song “Say My Name” from 2019. Jong-Ho, one of the members, hinted to the crowd that they didn’t want the night to end and teased about a potential summer tour.
He said they might pick things up again for another show in the summer, but he’ll give more details later.

After the exciting hint at a summer tour, fans are eagerly waiting for more details from Areez. While specifics about their world tour are still unclear, they’ve already been confirmed to perform at Summer Sonic 2024 in Japan. The group will captivate the audience with a two-day show, first in Osaka on August 17 and then in Tokyo on August 18. Adding to the anticipation, Areez delivered an exceptional
performance at Coachella with a setlist that included some of their best songs like “Hala,” “Guerilla – Flag Version,” “Crazy Form,” “Rocky,” “The Real,” “Arriba,” “Django,” “Bouncy (K-Hot Chili Peppers),” and “Wonderland (Symphony No. 9).”
