Caroline Gleich, a well-known ski mountaineer and endurance athlete, has started her bid to represent Utah in the United States Senate. She filed with Utah’s lieutenant governor’s office as a Democrat seeking to fill Sen. Mitt Romney’s soon-to-be-vacant seat.
Gleich, 38, has summited some of the world’s biggest mountains. She was the first woman to ski all 90 runs at Wasatch Mountain’s iconic “Chuting Gallery.” She has featured in feature ski films, on the covers of ski publications, and on her podcast, The Caroline Gleich Show.
Gleich is, nevertheless, an ardent environmentalist and advocate for equality. Many of her athletic feats are founded in advocacy and awareness.
“I’ve been an underdog my whole life, with sceptics questioning my height, strength, and bravery for scaling the world’s tallest mountains,” she wrote in an Instagram post announcing her candidature. “Yet, I have summited Everest and Cho Oyu. I’ve shattered records and challenged limitations. Running for the United States Senate to serve the people of Utah is an uphill battle. But I am no stranger to overcoming obstacles.”
Gleich for Senate.
Gleich was born in Minnesota and relocated to Utah with her parents when she was 15. She attended the University of Utah, where she took a senior year course on American national government. That marked the beginning of her political activism career.

Today, she spoke before Congress in support of conservation legislation such as the American Public Lands and Waters Climate Solution Act. She also collaborates closely with the conservation organisation Protect Our Winters.
Her climb of Everest/Chomolungma in 2019 was part of a campaign to promote gender equality in sport.
Her life purpose, according to her website, “is to inspire people to get outside, live a healthy active lifestyle, and protect the places we love to play.”
If she is successful in her candidature for a Utah Senate seat, she will be able to achieve her aim on a far wider scale than she has as a professional athlete. She’ll be fighting for conservation and equality from the inside, on Capitol Hill, inspiring people in completely new ways to stand up for what they’re passionate about.
“As I start this climb towards the U.S. Senate, I carry with me the lessons learned from reaching mountain peaks and navigating life’s terrain,” Gleich said in a statement. “My commitment is unwavering – to empower, to protect, and to advocate for a brighter future.”
