Bill Gates got his money honestly and has the right to do anything he wants with it, yet many people still don’t appreciate what he and his foundation do for society and the globe. Aside from Gates, there are many billionaires, but he is the only one who has worked to make the world a better place using his own money rather than other people’s money, such as taxes. He decided to encourage others rather than simply live a calm life, but I had no clue many on the internet now despised him. The Forbes magazine list includes many billionaires, but we don’t know what they’re doing with their money.
Israel & Palestine
There is nothing subtle about Israel’s conduct towards Palestinians, or its deliberate and purposeful extermination of a people who have lived in that area for millennia (“Holding Together Many Truths: An Indian Jewish Woman’s Perspective on Israel and Gaza”). By turning a blind eye to crimes done repeatedly for 75 years, the world, particularly Western countries, is equally responsible and must admit their culpability. Or then, what is the difference between Hitler and the so-called protectors of human values?
I don’t see how the Israeli government and those who support it can deal with having watched the Jewish Holocaust (“As the war on Gaza rages on, have human rights declarations been buried under the rubble?”).
Wrestlers’ courage, athletic feats
First, congrats on your objective, intrepid, and gutsy journalism that brings the truth to light. This article (Despite wrestlers’ courage, a culture of fear dominates Indian sport) is heartbreaking, and it’s horrible to see what Indian athletes have to go through to stay afloat. Politicians and bureaucrats have so tightly controlled our sporting bodies that athletes are unable to speak out.
Corruption, nepotism, intimidation, favouritism, and sexual harassment have grown so rampant that no one dares to speak out for fear of jeopardising their career. This is precisely why Indian athletes perform so poorly in the Olympics and other athletic sporting events. These issues also impact other nations’ athletic bodies, but their institutions develop and nourish talent, whereas ours stifles it.
Their achievements are well-deserved. Success cannot be achieved quickly.
Prizes do not convey everything. Vijay Amritraj earned less medals, but he popularised tennis in India. Leander Paes excelled in the doubles and mixed doubles competitions. Their accomplishments make India proud.
Right decision about Jammu and Kashmir
The Bharatiya Janata Party took the correct and brave move, which the Congress lacked (“‘Another betrayal’: In Kashmir, dismay, disappointment over Article 370 judgement”). I appreciate the Supreme Court for approving a long-pending necessity for India. Jammu and Kashmir is a part of India, and no foreign country or extremist may claim the territory. It may be a betrayal to all activists and radicals funded by nations who oppose Indian peace.
Well-deserved accolades.
First and foremost, congrats to the Scroll team on their recent achievements at the Red Ink Awards (“Scroll wins five RedInk Awards for Excellence in Indian Journalism”). They are really well-deserved. I’d also want to applaud you on what I feel is your platform’s deliberate decision not to use the term “Yogi” for Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath or Ajay Singh Bisht. Why raise this man’s standing to sainthood? Words matter, and the media has considerable influence, as you and I are well aware. Thank you for the responsible work you perform.
